. . In the spring, when fish eggs hatch and juvenile salmon emerge from the rivers and make their way to the ocean many are exposed to sea lice during their journey because fish farms are typically located in sheltered waters along wild salmon migration routes. . Juvenile pink and chum salmon are smaller than an AAA battery when they migrate by salmon farms and some may not have fully developed scales yet. . When lice attach themselves to juveniles, their bodies may not be able to cope, and they may die. . This is why I care. Our coast still feels this rush of life pushing far inland from the open ocean. Wild runs of salmon feed this place and I will not stand by and watch them go extinct. This is a Chinook salmon amongst Chums in the lower Fraser River, taken for @raincoastconservation with @aprilbencze on a mission to help tell the story of starving southern resident killer whales. Being in the water with these fish is my favourite thing in the world. #wildsalmon #fishlove #LastStandforWildSalmon #forthewildones #FishFarmsGetOut #wildrivers #fraserriver #harrisonriver

El 80 % de salmón cultivado Atlántico sobre la costa occidental de Canadá está infectado por Piscine reovirus, que ha sido vinculado a una enfermedad de salmón dañosa. ABSURDOS DE UMA HUMANIDADE POBRE Repost from @natgeo using @RepostRegramApp - WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT Video by @PaulNicklen and @TavishCampbell on an investigative dive mission off Vancouver Island. My first assignment for @natgeo in 2001 was on Atlantic salmon fish farming and I have never taken my finger off the pulse of this incredibly destructive industry. Right now, #bloodwater is being released from farmed salmon processing plants near Campbell River and Tofino, British Columbia which is infected with a virus that threatens wild salmon populations. 80% of farmed Atlantic salmon on Canada’s west coast are infected with Piscine reovirus, which has been linked to a harmful salmon disease. This aquaculture industry is operating without the consent of local First Nations who are demanding it transition out of the ocean and into land based systems. When you buy salmon, you vote with your dollars: always buy wild salmon or stop eating salmon all together. Great job @tavishcampbell and all those working on protecting our wild pacific salmon and the massive threat to their health and ours from open net Norwegian owned Atlantic fish farms. #standup4greatbear @paulnicklen @sea_legacy @iantmcallister @cristinamittermeier @alexmorton4salmon #Repost @tavishcampbell (@get_repost) ・・・ Young wild Pacific salmon migrate past a Norwegian owned Atlantic salmon farm on their way to the open ocean. These open net-pen farms amplify viruses and disease, threatening fragile wild stocks. 80% of all farmed salmon in B.C. are infected with Piscine reovirus. Even if this industry cleans up its dirty #bloodwater dumping, there are still millions of infected salmon in pens along wild salmon migration corridors. This dirty industry MUST transition to land based systems. Repost from @paulnicklen using @RepostRegramApp - Do you like to eat Atlantic Salmon as a healthier option? If so, you really should watch this. I have been fighting Atlantic Salmon fish farms in British Columbia waters for over 17 years. However, @tavishcampbell just hit a home run. Rivers of untreated fish blood polluted with pathogens pour into #Tofino and #CampbellRiver’s beautiful water. This is the situation at just one of many processing plants that works with B.C.’s toxic #FishFarm industry. From open-net Atlantic salmon pens which cause wild Pacific salmon species huge damage, to operating without permission in First Nations waters, to clearly disregarding the local ecosystems, the current state of #fishfarming in British Columbia is an embarrassing, horrendous mess. Tavish and others are shedding a light on this nightmare industry.
