So many of you chose #wheelpose for your #ChooseYourResolution #backbend pose to work on, so I wanted to share some of my favorite warm ups with you! . 1.) #leighsdoorwayshoulderstretch is fantastic and honestly it’s a game changer if you can remember to do it daily. . 2.) #PuppyPose is my daily in the shower stretch and is another game changer if practiced regularly. . 3.) If you don’t have a #yogawheel, get one. It’s the single best #yogaprop I’ve ever invested in and has done more for my backbend practice and spinal health than I can express to you. Code Leighemily will get you 10 bucks off a @yogaprowheel or you can sign up to be an ambassador yourself. But all the wheels are good...doesn’t matter what brand. . 4.) #hipflexorstretch is soooooo important for your wheel pose practice. Don’t skip it!!! Spend 10 breaths on each side...at your edge. You are looking for stretch in quad and hip flexor....NOT pain in your knee. Back off if you feel pain. Use towels for comfort. . 5.) Be good to your wrists. Mine hurt, so I found if I put blocks at an angle between the floor and wall, then my wrists don’t have to bend as much. You can do this without a baseboard to prop them on, you just have to be careful...use a sticky mat. Work towards kissing the wall...pretend it’s your long lost Lover you haven’t seen in forever...😘🤣 . Do this whole routine as often as you can...and enjoy the rush as your back/chest starts opening, little by little, but never push through real pain. You can tell the difference between nudging at your edge and real pain that tells you injury is imminent. Be smart and listen to your body. . If I can do this, YOU can do this! I’ve had surgery on my right shoulder for a torn labrum, I’ve fractured two different vertebrae, and I have scoliosis. No excuses! You’ve got this! . I'm posting this for all the people that say, "I'm not flexible enough for yoga." Look at me! You probably think I didn't try here, but I am. I can't go very deep at the moment (numerous 16 hour plane rides, sitting in transport, etc) This is not pretty, but that's just it: it's not supposed to be. Sure, I'd love to FEEL my shoulders open more. It would be more pleasing to look at too, but I'm not there today. I'm not there most days. I have tight shoulders and neck injuries and I can't go deeper than this 90% of the time. However, I used to have even less range of motion than this. If I never did backbends, I'd be an even straighter line than this and I'd have a lot more tension, tightness and pain. My shoulders will one day line up with my hands on this pose, but until then, I'm happy I can even do this. The final pose for the #yogicsummer2017 challenge is Wheel - Sanskrit name Urdhva Dhanurasana with @earthfulgypsy - I chose to practice and share Camel pose (Ustrasana) which is a fantastic prep for Wheel that helps open the front of the body and strengthen the back. Wheel is currently not in my practice as I'm still healing and strengthening my core. - - Important note- large backbends are not appropriate for pregnant or postpartum students or women with any core or pelvic floor issues (diastasis recti, prolapse, etc). I teach a modified version of Camel with hands on the hips or blocks to my prenatal and postnatal students. - - This has been a fun and humbling experience as I'm slowly returning to my pre-pregnancy practice with a whole new body! - - We'll announce the winner tomorrow. Good afternoooon ✌🏾💕I'm still working on my strength and flexibility so again not much pole play time 😫Can I say I am so happy to have finally invested in a Yoga wheel! If you've ever been unfortunate enough to take a yoga class with me you'll know I'm no expert and it's painful to watch, so I'm using this wheel as a totes-basic bitch-stretch-enthusiast who needs a little help deepening some stretches in order to advance to the next level. I've been contemplating buying one for around a year now, I just never thought I'd get my use out of it and thought it was specifically for the more advanced yoga babes out there. NOT TRUE ... I actually use this thing twice a day and it's worked great for me at my level. It's especially good for after a long day at work, if I position myself just right all tension from poor posture at my desk mostly in my lower and middle back just melts away as I roll. I also love the core work I get in as so much balance is needed for some poses and it takes my whole weight. There isn't even a hint of this thing breaking under the pressure of maaa bawwwwdy. I'd recommend this to anybody at any level, yoga queen or basic bitch stretch enthusiast like me. I LOVE IT!! Stretching on the reformer! This is a tough one, why? Well those straps are stretching my quads BUT, I am actively lengthening my spine so that I don't collapse in the low back since the straps are actually challenging my ability not to scrunch in my low back, i.e. oppositional lenght👌. Bonus, this works your backline like crazy because of the swan position🐳 I've gotten so much better at backbends on the convex side through Pilates, through gentle and dynamic stretches, then more advanced stretches, not just sitting in the joints but actually lengthening in the stretch hence activating those little muscles teaching them to stay long in any functional movement. I meant to post this last night but I had some technical difficulties... I wanted to work on my form for #onwednesdayswedropback so here are some drills and stretches that I did to prep for dropbacks and standing back up. The stretches are sped up x20! Haha 2 minutes crammed into 6 seconds. I've been doing too much these days so have really been trying to slow things down and stretch into it. (You can't really tell in this video with the crazy #looneytunes🎶 ) and the stretches coincided with day 8 of #catswheelseries oh maaaaan that #standingbackbend at the wall felt amazing!!! It was exactly what my wheel needs!! My shoulders and arms are always eternally tight and it's so hard to focus on really opening the chest, but this stretch did wonders. Day 3 of #catswheelseries is hip flexor work. Coincidentally, I set a goal on January 1st to be able to do pistol squats by year's end, so this was right in line with my current practice. My balance is off kilter a bit, so this position was challenging to maintain. I had to prop with a small blanket under my heel to get myself leveled. Does anyone know the key to balancing on a flat foot in this pose? Is it ankle flexibility? Glute strength? I keep falling over backwards. 😂 Any suggestions @jennifer.laur.fitness?? Kneeling cat!!! Another favorite!!! I love the feeling this gives my spine, the length, the flexion the extension and rotation🐳. This is a picture mid way where I am pressing long through my spine in opposition to gain as much length and even distribution in my spine as possible while maintaining scapular stability and control and the connection in my core and rib cage! Again genius, I love Pilates it's so fascinating how it works!!!!!🙏. Spinal articulation is the key!!! Thank you @skyysymphony for such an amazing session as always! 💜. Shoulder and upper back opener with my Dharma Yoga Wheel!!! So many things to try with this Wheel, I love it!!! This one really allows the chest to be soft and heavy thus creating space in the upper back and shoulders. It feels amazing!!!! Thigh stretch with the added backbend on the Pilates Cadillac!👍👌 Tightness in the hips often translates to tightness in the back. This amazing exercise teaches our body just how important this relationship is. The picture here demonstrates that By using the length of your thighs you can obtain a better more evenly distributed back bend as shown here vs. just using the low back which is where most people default. The upper back through the length obtained in the thighs is much better grounded. This is also much safer on the low back as a result since the start of the backbend is correctly anchored by the lower body (oppositional length) in this supported exercise on the roll down bar👍 An excellent supported stretch to build on for thigh stretch on the reformer and mat👍. Bonus? Great for the glutes, core, arms and back muscles! 🐳💜👌 note, this is a much more advanced version of the standard thigh stretch exercise which I will post at some point too😉. Upper back opener! Still loving my Dharma Yoga Wheel from @upcircleseven 🙌. This is a great UPPER BACK opener. I capitalize this because I often find that people in backbends overuse their low back vs finding distribution throughout the whole spine, something that we teach heavily in Pilates. This type of distribution will prevent overuse and injury in the long term🙌 Here I'm purposely keeping my low back in neutral while finding extension in my upper back, especially great for trying to work the scoliosis👍🐳🙌. Also great for improving flexibility for guess what??? Um golf!!! ⛳️⛳️⛳️. Loving this stretch and wow is it tough!!! Try this if you have one of these Wheels!!👊👌👍

Working my way to the ground. Being able to do a full wheel pose is one of the yoga goals on my list and lately I've been working extra hard on limbering up my spine and increasing the suppleness of the muscles in my back. Doorways are great tools for this stretch as they help me hold my balance and allow me to stretch more of my back than I can using the floor. Having something to hold onto allows me to go deeper into the stretch and it feels absolutely amazing. Swan on the Cadillac! How many of you overuse your low back then have low back pain??? This exercise trains our motor skills to understand that we have movement in our upper back which helps protect the low back and prevent/reduce low back pain, brilliant!👍. The key here is to articulate the upper back (i.e. Rib cage part of your back) in order to create length and flexibility in an area (i.e. upper back) that is often neglected and hence stiffens as we get older. We can achieve this by using our core to maintain length and create stabilization for the low back. Bottom line, flexibility in the upper back helps prevent injury in the low back. 👍 this exercise also helps prepare someone safely for wheel pose, hollow back, camel pose and any other back bend pose because it allows the body to find space in the entire spine (not just in the low back) in a supported position. Great for shoulder flexibility and finding scapular mobility (esp. for men!) I will show in my next post how much this has helped me with certain yoga poses. 👑 I've discovered King Arthur pose 🙌🏼 This pose provides a gorgeous stretch down your thigh, through your quads and hip flexors. As you press your tush and back to the wall you feel a meaningful stretch across your lower back and it gives you a really nice extension.
