Bend Over Backwards :: Here’s the second post in my yoga mini series on joint safety. Today we tackle a favorite of mine: Supported Fish Pose, or Matsyasana 2/4. . Backbending, or spinal extension, is a necessary move when trying to maintain and improve spine health and mobility. For many of us who live in constant state of hunching forward though backbending can feel brutally uncomfortable. The trick is to start with gentle, supported backbends and slowly progress from there. . How to: 1. Lay over a bolster, rolled mat, or pool noodle so the support goes across your back at the level of your ribcage. 2. Bend your knees or straighten out your legs along the floor depending on how your neck and lower back feel. 3. Optional: Place a prop like a folded blanket under your bum (shown here with one blanket) to minimize the backbend and to keep your spine happy if you feel low back or neck pain. . You should be able to breath normally and easily so use as many or as few props as needed to get there. Aim to stay in this position for a few minutes. Remember: no remain, no gain. . Position your arms in a comfortable way so long as your shoulders roll down to the floor and not up. . Now go try it! Restorative Yoga! As promised, I'm going to be posting more restorative poses ❤️ I figured I'd start with my favorite restoring pose first, Supta Baddha Konasana, aka reclined bound angle pose or reclined cobblers pose. . As you can see, I've got 5 different variations here. But the options are endless. As long as you've got the bottoms of you feet drawn towards touching and an opening in your chest and hips, you're doing it right. I'm using yoga props here, but you can use anything you've got in your home (blankets, pillows, books). I highly recommend getting props though, if your budget allows. They're worth the investment. This pose can also be done with no props though. . Supta Baddha Konasana benefits - - Soothes the nervous system and helps with symptoms of anxiety - Increases circulation in the lower abdomen which helps with menstruation issues - Opens the hips and chest - Increases circulation in the abdomen which improves and aids in digestion - Provides a passive deep stretch for the inner thighs - Feels amazing and allows for deep relaxation. . This pose is meant to feel good. If you feel a strain anywhere, adjust or add props to support. Common areas that need extra support are the outside of the thighs, the arms, the feet and ankles and the head / neck. . Emmy’s dance teacher cut circles out of a yoga mat and i thought it was a genius idea! I’ve been having fun experimenting with my yoga mat circles in both my toddler and elementary school age classes. We’ve tried hopscotch, downdog walks over them, and using them as focus points. . Do I realise that I post a lot of the same asana? Yes, I totally do. There are three reasons: . 1) I've stopped teaching many asana. Frog pose yin yoga-style is an absolute hell no. Plough pose (HALASANA) also no because I don't think the risk to cervical spine damage is worth any of the benefits. And even a "basic" pose like TRIKONASANA I am sparing with as it is a difficult pose to teach in a group class especially with beginners. . 2) Due to my injuries, I can't do many of the flashier asana like peacock, scorpion, firefly -- and I don't have any desire to either. I don't teach things I don't practise myself. So does this mean I'm short-changing my students? Mulling over this used to disturb me. But I believe that it is possible to have a strong practice -- and more importantly, a healthy body & mind -- without flashy asana in one's repertoire. . 3) The stuff I teach works and is safe. I believe this 100% because I injured myself through my own practice. What is left now are the asana that bring me stability, strength & balance. Yes we all want a good stretch in yoga class. But let's pull back on extreme ranges of motion and focus on CONTROL (far sexier, methinks). . . All this to say, SUPTA PADANGUSTHASANA I up against a door frame is a pose I will teach every week. One of the biggest misconceptions about learning to handstand is that you will best find balance in a straight handstand. Maintaining the perfectly straight line while upside down is actually one of the hardest variations, which is why so many people who learn it this way end up engraining in a habit of "banana back," which might feel easier, but is damaging over time. Instead of shooting right for straight, focus on shapes that give you some counterbalance. A small V. An L (as shown here). The back leg serves as the accelerator while the one closer to the ground is your brake. Both legs are fiercely engaged. Below left is the revealing Donald Neumann (Kinesiology) Illustration of the scapulo-humeral rhythm that, unlike most other illustrations or accounts, includes the important actions of the clavicle which both elevates at the distal end and rotates posteriorly and contributes to the entire process. Alison says it should be called the Claviculo-Scapulo-Humeral Rhythm. In any event, once you learn it, you will never take your shoulders down your back when the arms are up again, unless there is a sound reason to do so, but then your arms won’t really be in full flexion!
